Using polyvinyl alcohol (PVA) foam, Hydrofera Blue CLASSIC is an antibacterial dressing containing a combination of methylene blue and gentian violet to absorb and hold onto exudate and control bacteria present in the wound bed. These pigments have been used safely in medicine for over 50 years and have been proven effective against a variety of microorganisms including MRSA and VRE.
In addition to being bacteriostatic, its open cell structure provides capillary vacuum action to draw excess fluid and exudates from the wound bed. Hydrofera Blue must be moistened with sterile saline or sterile water, squeezed out and secured to the wound bed with an appropriate secondary dressing. When kept moist, Hydrofera Blue is incredibly soft and comfortable for the patient. Once Hydrofera Blue CLASSIC is applied to the wound, PVA moves exudate containing bacteria into the foam via natural negative pressure. This not only creates a moist healing environment but also helps control bioburden and provide autolytic debridement. With time, this combination helps flatten the wound’s edges, healing the area and reducing potential scarring.
Change the dressing every 3 days. If the dressing has retained its blue color where it has been in contact with the wound, the new dressing can be left in place for up to 3 days. If the dressing turned white or lightened in color, continue daily dressing changes until the blue color is retained.
If the dressing is dry, thoroughly remoisten with sterile saline or sterile water. Then gently remove the dressing.
