Description
Solventum (Formerly 3M) Cavilon Advanced Skin Protectant
3M Health Care is now Solventum. The same products you know and trust, now under a new brand.
Solventum (Formerly 3M) Cavilon Advanced Skin Protectant is a unique, elastomeric polymer created to heal and protect damaged or at-risk skin. A coating is formed to protect, not crack, your skin against tough irritants, like liquid stool or gastric fluids.
Solventum’s (Formerly 3M) Cavilon Advanced Skin Protectant creates a waterproof, flexible barrier that helps prevent Incontinence Associated Dermatitis (IAD), reduces the need for reapplication and improves upon traditional paste-based solutions.
How it Works
This no-removal, long-lasting barrier can be worn for up to seven days before reapplying without damaging the skin and prevents irritants from worsening the patient’s condition. Using a revolutionary polymer-cyanoacrylate, Solventum (Formerly 3M) Cavilon Advanced Skin Protectant grabs ahold to wet, weepy, damaged skin, creating a breathable environment that repels irritants and supports your healing and comfort. This single-use applicator reduces the risk of cross-contamination. The non-stinging solution is perfect for quick application without the need to remove the product afterwards.
Usage
The solution is ideal for:
- Peristomal and peritube skin protection – for problem stomas, poor stoma location, and high-volume output
- Addressing moisture and friction lesions
- Reversing and preventing the spread of IAD caused by liquid stool, mixed incontinence, or urine
- Reducing patient pain
- Venous ulcers or infected wounds
- Pressure Ulcers and Injury
- Skin stripping or maceration
This product comes in 2 sizes: 2.7mL (perfect for protecting the skin around a fistula and IAD prevention and management) and 0.7mL (for peristomal, peritube, and periwound protection).
In Action
- The material protects against gastric fluid and liquid stool while allowing the patient to move naturally.
- Compared to pastes, Cavilon Advanced Skin Protectant provides a higher degree of transparency for improved monitoring.
- A single-use applicator prevents potential cross-contamination and helps improve healing.
- Once in place, Cavilon Advanced Skin Protectant won’t shift or detach, no matter if the patient has dry or wet skin or a weeping wound.
- Cavilon Advanced Skin Protectant won’t damage or irritate the skin during the removal process.
- Following removal, the skin simply needs to be cleaned.
How to Apply
- Cleanse the skin thoroughly and gently with a skin cleanser or purified water. Gently dry the areas of intact skin as needed.
- Grasp the applicator and place your thumb at the end of the lever.
- Aim the applicator sponge downward and firmly depress the level to break the internal ampule. You will hear a snap or pop when this breaks.
- Keep the applicator pointed downward for approximately 10 seconds to allow the fluid to flow into the foam sponge. The entire sponge should not be covered in product or soaked/dripping.
- Apply Solventum (Formerly 3M) Cavilon Advanced Skin Protectant by gently wiping the foam sponge across the affected area and surrounding skin. Use an even, sweeping motion with minimal overlap of product. Additional pressure on the applicator is not necessary and can result in excessive wetness or pooling of product.
- Continue the application until the entire area of concern has been covered. Be sure to apply Solventum (Formerly 3M) Cavilon Advanced Skin Protectant to all skin that is exposed to stool and/or urine.
- Allow the area to dry for at least 30 seconds. If you have skipped an area, wait until the fluid has dried completely before applying additional product.
- If you applying Solventum (Formerly 3M) Cavilon Advanced Skin Protectant to a skin fold or areas of skin-to-skin contact, be sure to separate the skin surfaces for 30 seconds to allow the fluid to dry completely before returning to the normal position.
- Allow the product to dry for an additional 60 seconds before applying an adhesive dressing or tape. The film will wear off and does not require removal. If you would like to remove the protectant before it has been absorbed, you may use an adhesive remover that contains hexamethyldisiloxane (HMDS) or silicone polymer.
Common Questions About Solventum (Formerly 3M) Cavilon Advanced Skin Protectant
Can you reuse Solventum (Formerly 3M) Cavilon Advanced Skin Protectant?
It is not recommended to reuse or reapply Solventum (Formerly 3M) Cavilon Advanced Skin Protectant to the wound after the initial application. After applying the skin protectant to the wound, dispose of any leftover product.
This product is part of Solventum’s (Formerly 3M) comprehensive plan for the treatment of diabetic foot ulcers (DFU) and venous leg ulcers (VLU). Too often, dressing changes and exudate overflow result in skin irritation, causing a lag in wound healing. Protection of at-risk periwound skin from excess exudate and mechanical trauma is an essential element in treating these often-stubborn conditions.
