SILVERCEL Antimicrobial Alginate Dressing

SILVERCEL™ Dressing is a sterile, non-woven pad composed of high G (guluronic acid) alginate, carboxymethylcellulose (CMC), and silver coated nylon fibers. Antimicrobial, this dressing helps maintain a moist wound environment, protecting newly-formed tissue and minimizing fibre detachment.
HOW DOES IT WORK?
- Exudate management
The unique composition of the dressing manages exudate in moderate to heavily exuding wounds, promoting a favorable environment for effective wound management.
- Tensile strength
SILVERCEL™ Dressing increases its tensile strength when in contact with wound exudate, allowing for intact removal. In a study, tensile strength increased by 56% when wet compared to dry.
- Antimicrobial action
SILVERCEL™ Dressing provides a sustained release of silver with in the dressing for up to 7 days, allowing for an effective antimicrobial protection for the entire wear time, depending on the level of exudate.

On exposure to high levels of wound exudate, SILVERCEL™ Dressing retained its shape and mechanical strength and remained at the site of application.
SILVERCEL™ Dressing was significantly more effective in the management of wound exudate than Aquacel® Ag.
Wounds managed with Aquacel® Ag presented a higher level of trapped dressing debris, which led to foreign body reaction and a noticeably higher mean wound-tissue disruption score.
SILVERCEL protects against a broad spectrum of germs that are pathogenic to the wound, including MRSA, MRSE, and VRE and destroys biofilms effectively in vitro.
SILVERCEL Dressings can be covered and secured with a non-occlusive secondary dressing.
SILVERCEL Dressings may also be effective in the treatment of burns without causing problems such as drying out and adherence.
Uses
SILVERCEL™ Dressing is intended for use in the management of all moderate to heavily exuding partial and full-thickness chronic wounds, including:
- Pressure injuries
- Venous ulcers
- Diabetic ulcers
- Donor sites
- Traumatic and surgical wounds
How to Use SILVERCEL Antimicrobial Alginate Dressing
- Select a dressing size that is slightly larger than the wound. Debride when necessary and irrigate the wound site in accordance with appropriate wound managament protocol. Remove any excess solution from the surrounding skin.
- Using clean scissors, cut SILVERCEL or fold the dressing to fit the wound.
- Ensure the dressing does not overlap the wound margins.
- Gently apply SIVERCEL dressing to the wound.
- Loosely pack deep wounds. As wound conditions improve and exudate levels decrease, moisten the wound bed with normal saline solution prior to application.
- Cover SILVERCEL dressing with a secondary dressing. Choose a secondary dressing based on the level of exudate. Apply a secondary cover or retention/compression bandage.
- Removal – gently remove the dressing from the wound bed and discard. If the wound appears dry, saturate the dressing with sterile solution prior to removal. Dressing change frequency will depend on wound condition and the level of exudate. Reapply SILVERCEL dressing when the secondary dressing has reached its absorbent capacity or according to good wound care practice.
This product is part of Solventum’s (Formerly 3M) comprehensive plan for the treatment of diabetic foot ulcers (DFU) and venous leg ulcers (VLU). Biofilm, present in greater than 70% of chronic wounds, causes persistent inflammation and poor wound healing. Wound bed preparation, including the management of biofilm, is an essential element in treating these often-stubborn conditions.
